Bonfire night; fun for us, your dogs nightmare!
Here's a few tips to keep your dog calm this Bonfire Night:
# Keep calm yourself, remember your dog can mirror you emotional state; if you are constantly cuddling them or panicking and worrying for your dogs state they may feel even more uncomfortable and make them feel as though there is something to be fearful over.
# Make sure you have took your dog for a nice long walk that afternoon, if they have being well exercised they are more likely to be tired out and want to just sleep.
# Make sure their surroundings are comfortable, close windows and curtains to stop the bright lights peering into the house; make sure they have somewhere comfortable to lye with blankets and toys surrounding them.
# Distraction could be key; put the tele on or some music to drown out some of the noise, not too loud though, have play time with your dog whilst the fireworks are being let off or give them a nice chew or chew toy.
# Don't leave them alone, if you are planning on going out, see if anyone could come and sit with your dog to relax them.
Kenneling would not be reccomended.
# A nice stodgy high carb late afternoon dinner, such as well cooked rice or pasta; this will help them feel more sleepy and calm during the evening. (Just make sure they go to the toilet before bed).
Little tips:
- Keep the water bowl topped up, dogs may become thirstier than usual due to their fear.
- Try and find out timings of local fireworks or if neighbours are having any private showings.
- Make sure your dog has their tag and collar on in case of escaping in fear.
