Teach an old dog new clicks

The Clicker is an amazing method to train your dog to do many things, whether it be simple things like sitting or enough tricks to get them into crufts.

Here are a few tips and tricks to get your dog responding to the clicker...


#1 Getting your dog establishing and responding to the clicker
Step 1- Click and once the dog responds give them a treat
Step 2- Repeat this as regularly as possible
Step 3- Your dog should now associate the clicker with rewards.
Step 4- Maintain, never click without giving a treat as this will lead to extinguishment of learning.

#2 Getting your dog to sit
Step 1- Wait for your dog to sit, when they do click andgive them a treat
Step 2- Repeat this as many times, for when you want them to sit and say the word 'sit'
Step 3-  Continue to say sit and use the clicker until they do so, then treat
Step 4- Maintain, everytime your dog sits for you treat.

#3 Get your dog to high five
Step 1- Get your dog to sit in front of you and encourage them to lift their paw
Step 2- When they lift their paw click and treat
Step 3- Repeat this a few times
Step 4- Begin to say the word 'paw' when they lift their paw up and click and treat
Step 5- However how high they lift the paw keep rewarding and saying paw
Step 6- Continue to say 'paw' and click each time until reactin acquired
Step 7- Maintain, keep the practice up, you can encourage your dog to lift their paw higher by tickling the hollow behind the paw

#4 Get your dog to bring your slippers
Step 1- Teach your dog the name of slippers, by showing slippers, clicking and saying name
Step 2- Repeat until the dog recognises the name slippers and the object
Step 3- Teach your dog to pick up slippers, when does so click and treat.
Step 4- Repeat proccess
Step 5- Place your slippers on the otherside of the room, click and tell your dog 'get my slippers' emphasising on the word 'slippers' and if your dog does so treat
Step 6- Repeat proccess until dog responds perfectly
Step 7- Put your feet up and relax
